MAINTENANCE GUIDE

What is oxidation?

Regarding metals, oxidation refers to the loss of their characteristic shine until rust forms on their surface, due to prolonged exposure to air, humidity, sweat and skin secretions, direct exposure to the sun, and many other factors.

Oxidation is an inevitable and natural process of metal alloys for jewelry.

Gold or silver oxidize more slowly than other copper alloys like bronze.

Galvanic Baths

Jewelry is galvanically coated against oxidation through a treatment called Galvanic Flash performed by a small artisan company I work with.

Through galvanic treatments, a thin layer of metal (rhodium or 18k gold) is applied, which can improve certain characteristics of the jewelry, such as resistance to oxidation.

However, over time, sweat or neglect will eventually wear off the galvanic coating, so it will need to be redone.

What to do to best preserve the jewelry and plating?

Protect your jewelry
• When not wearing it, store it in its box or pouch.

• Remove it when washing your hands or showering. Soaps and detergents tarnish metal and can damage delicate stones such as amber, pearls, opals, and many others.

• In the case of enameled surfaces, be careful with soaps and heat sources, as they can damage the enamel.

• Avoid contact with cosmetics, hairsprays, perfumes, etc.

• Never wear it in the pool, sauna, or spa. Chlorine stains surfaces!

• Avoid heat sources.

• Never wear it when spraying pesticides and chemical treatments.

Jewelry Care
What I recommend doing to best maintain the jewelry.
• Gently wash your jewelry in a bowl of warm distilled water and a little neutral soap or facial cleanser, rub it well with your hands or a cotton swab.

• There are polishing cloths available on the market.

Here is an Amazon link for purchasing the one I use: Hagerty Silver Cloth

The final effect is not comparable to that obtained from maintenance by a jeweler, which I recommend doing from time to time.
